Parker Street Food & Furniture Bank is a
not-for-profit organization that provides food, furniture, skills
development, mentoring and support services to the residents of the
Halifax Regional Municipality.
It is a registered charitable organization
administered by the Community Care Network Society - Charitable
Registration Number: 14015 1465 RR0001
Parker Street Food Bank officially began
operation in 1983. The Furniture Bank was established in 1995 at a
separate location. In 1999, the two entities merged to operate in the
same building at 2415 Maynard Street Halifax.
In 2006, the Parker Street Furniture Bank
distributed over 7000 pieces of furniture and approximately 2500
articles of clothing. Also distributed was over 300 small appliances.
Not included in these statistics are over a thousand non-inventory
household items such as kitchen utensils, dishes, cutlery, linens,
bedding, curtains, drapes, etc.
In 2003, Parker Street Food & Furniture Bank
started the Computer Recycling program. This program provides our
students and other students within HRM computers to continue their
education. These systems are donated by government, corporate and
individual sponsors and are refurbished by Parker Street's technicians.
In 2003, Parker Street Food & Furniture Bank
- Community Care Network Society commenced Job Skills Development
Programs. Starting with two programs, this division of the Community
Care Network keeps expanding and growing bringing skilled workers into
industry. To date, 136 students have completed these programs.
In 2001, Parker Street Food & Furniture Bank
began its Information Technology Program. This program, run in
co-operation with and accredited by the Nova Scotia Community College.
Since that time, 334 students have completed courses offered through
this program.
