Services and Programs

Food Bank

Client Requirements:

It is mandatory for any client registering for food or furniture services to present the following items:

~ A valid government issued Canadian Health Card Number OR a government issued Canadian Immigration Card Number.
~ Photo Identification.
~ Proof of Canadian Citizenship OR Landed Immigrant Status.
~ Proof of Address.

Frequency of Visits:
We currently issue grocery orders to clients every THREE weeks.

Provision of Food:
Any family or client, with a proven need, wishing to receive a grocery order is welcome to stop by the Food Bank at 2415 Maynard Street on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 8:30 AM - 11:30 AM. Registration begins a half-hour before order times. Any disabled, ill or elderly clients who are unable to visit our facility will be provided a home delivery service. Please call the Food Bank during office hours (425-2125) to make delivery arrangements.

Note:
Each client/family is permitted to receive one order every three weeks. All order sizes are subject to food availability.

Furniture Bank

Provision of Furniture:
All furniture and household items are provided free of charge to any family with proven needs; however, a delivery charge may apply. Please call the Furniture Bank (453-4886) during office hours (8-4, M-F) or stop by our offices (8-4, M-F) and a delivery time will be arranged. If the furniture that you need is not in stock, wait lists are available.

Note: All orders are subject to availability. All applicants must present a valid Nova Scotia Health Card or Immigration Number. Delivery is subject to scheduling restraints and location of drop off.

We no longer accept large appliances such as stoves, refrigerators, deep freezes, washers and dryers. If you have something to donate or require pick-up, please call us at 453-4886.

Computer Skills Training

An Introduction to Information Technology The objective of this program is to provide an introduction to information technology and career development skills, utilizing the Parker Street Food & Furniture Bank’s computer lab/classroom facilities. The focus is to assist individuals dependent upon the food bank by helping to provide them with the necessary skills to confidently enter the workforce.

Our goal is to improve employability and literacy skills and to further assist in breaking the cycle of poverty by providing access to instruction in the use of computers. These skills can be used to prepare resumes, conduct work searches and much more.

- Access
- PowerPoint



Upon completion of all 4 modules, students receive a refurbished computer so that they can continue their education. Computers are subject to availability.

Skills Development Training
"Building partnerships with industry and business, to develop, design, and deliver skilled programs for tomorrows workforce." Learn more about our Building Supply Customer Associate Program - in partnership with HomeDepot - and our Automotive Service Advisors Programs - in partnership with the Nova Scotia Automotive Sector Council. These programs are designed to provide trade and life skills that lead to employment. Call 444-3522 or email us for more information.

Computer Recycling Program

The computer recycling program has provided over 600 computers to the students of our Skills Development Programs, University Students, and those who are in need of a computer to continue with their education or to enhance their employability.



We receive the computers from various donors and have skilled workers to refurbish the systems to be given to clients.

When a system is given out, it includes the CPU, monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

There is an application process to receive a computer. Please call 425-2125 or come in to fill out an application.

Community Programs

Traditional Christmas Dinner Program: Every December, the Parker Street Food & Furniture Bank works in cooperation with Bedford Institute of Oceanography, Moirs Chocolates (Hershey's) and farmers from the Valley to provide a boxed Christmas Dinner to HRM families in need. In 2006, in partnership with THE TURKEY CLUB’s generous financial donation to this project, 798 families and individuals were helped through the Christmas Dinner program. All the ingredients for a traditional Christmas dinner are provided: including potatoes, carrots, turnip, onions, oranges, apples, bananas, sugar, margarine, candy, baked goods, bread, canned milk, cranberry sauce, stuffing mix and a turkey. With the incredible help of the Bedford Institute of Oceanography staff who volunteer their time each year on this project, the food boxes were assembled, and 250 Christmas dinner boxes were delivered directly to clients who are unable to visit our facility. Throughout the year, children’s toys are gathered so that parents have the opportunity to choose appropriate items for their family. Neighbourhood Clean Up: The Neighbourhood Clean Up was initiated as part of Clean Nova Scotia's Great Nova Scotia Pick-Me-Up, united in a common goal to keep the Halifax inner city streets clean and safe. Parker Street started their support and involvement in this program in 2003 in the north end Halifax.

Emergency Response: In the case of an emergency - one that might lead to an unsafe, unhealthy or homeless situation - please call us at 446-3993 and we will see what we can do to help. This resource is not only for financial crisis. Aide can also be in the form of crisis support as well as referrals to support services.

CCNS Flooring Installation Program
>> Joe's parents had difficulty convincing their 22 year-old son to enroll in the Flooring Installation Course - because he feared failure so greatly. He had ADD and other learning disabilities, and his self-esteem had hit rock-bottom.. But after Joe (not his real name) graduated from the course, his mother wrote, "What this course did for my son was to provide him with the single most important educational experience of his life to this point, he knows now that he can pass a course, that he can learn, and that he can succeed. He has the skills to do things that he thought weren’t possible for him and is empowered by the fact that he could learn it and retain it. If nothing were to come of this - but it will - this course made a massive difference in his life. This happened because you people believed in him and his classmates, no matter what their difficulties in life, you made them comfortable in an environment that allowed them to learn, and you are supporting them after." Joe is currently on a work placement and has received wonderful reviews from his employer. A full-time job is on the horizon and Joe is a changed man.

Food & Furniture Bank
>> One young mother, struggling to put herself through nursing school, is grateful to Parker Street Food & Furniture Bank for giving her food and furniture so that she and her 5 year-old son could survive. But she is most thankful that she now has a future, she can stand on her own, and she's with her son. She says she will never forget the people at Parker Street Food & Furniture Bank because "We are like a family now. The people here smile and call you by name, welcome you and go out of their way to help you when you need it most. Thank you."
