Skill Training

An Introduction to Information Technology

Computer Skills TrainingThis program uses Parker Street’s computer lab/classroom to deliver an introduction to information technology and career development skills. Through this program, we provide people who depend on the food bank with skills so they can confidently enter the workforce.

Our goal is to improve employability and literacy skills in the Halifax Regional Municipality. Our programs help break the cycle of poverty by showing individuals how to use computers for preparing resumes, conducting work searches and more.

Courses include Microsoft Office Programs:

  • Word
  • Excel
  • Access
  • PowerPoint

Upon completion of all four modules, we give students a refurbished computer so they can continue their education. Computers are subject to availability.

If you would like more information on this program, and how to become involved as a student or as a volunteer, please contact our office at 425-2125 (8 am – 4 pm Mon-Fri).

Upcoming courses will be based on industry need and secured funding. We will post more details here when available.

Skills Development Training

Parker Street is dedicated to building partnerships with industry and business to develop, design, and deliver skilled programs for tomorrow’s workforce. These programs are designed to provide trade and life skills that lead to employment. Call 425-2125 or email us for more information.

Our skills development training and our many other programs are made possible thanks to the generous support of our partners:

  • Nova Scotia Community College
  • Nova Scotia Department of Education
  • Industry and Sector Councils
  • Department of Community Services
  • Service Canada.
Computer Recycling Program

Our computer recycling program has provided more than 700 computers to:

  • students in our Skills Development Programs
  • university students
  • people who need a computer to continue their education or enhance their employability.

We receive computers from various donors, and skilled workers refurbish them before we give them out to those in need. In addition to the CPU, we include a monitor, keyboard, and mouse in every computer system.

We are only able to offer computers based on how many we have on hand. If you are in need of a computer, please call 425-2125, or visit our office to fill out an application.

If you have computer items to donate, call us 425-2125, or send us an email.
